Power Lifters

Power Lifters

“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly” -JFK

The Power Lifters portraits are a metaphor for existence and life’s mental and physical struggles. As in Homer’s Odyssey, every test that Odysseus encounters takes huge mental and physical strength. Just when Odysseus is about to give up at the height of mental and physical exhaustion, he succeeds. A Power Lifter is forced to face physical and mental weaknesses and strengths to overcome fears and doubts of what the body can achieve.

To convey the essence of life’s existential struggles, I focused on the pivotal moment where extreme exertion, mental focus, and physical strength come together. The greatest Greek statue, Laocoon and His Sons, is an example of a powerful metaphor for life’s existential struggle. This is articulated in Laocoon’s taut body and expressive head. Fundamental to the existence of every form of life is the struggle to overcome the barriers that come with survival and existence.
