BIOGRAPHY

BR. Marcus was born in the United States. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts with awards from the advertising community in advertising/design. Photography was integral to the schools program and was important to becoming an art director/designer. As a graphic designer, he won awards for print design. He worked for Doyle Dane Bernbach advertising as an art director on Volkswagen, Polaroid, Clairol, and Kraft/GF accounts. While an art director, he worked for many years with the top photographers: Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, and Hiro.

Marcus, a fine-art photographer, began mixing the concepts of the Golden Age of Dutch Portraiture painting in the 17th century and European sculpture of the 19th century with the more modernist approach of August Sanders, Penn, and Avedon. He explores life and death motivations driven by beliefs, emotions, and emulation. Marcus believes these manifest in physical appearances. For over 30 years, he worked to give deep psychological meaning to his photography. Many of his portraits are photographed with the Polaroid 20x24 inch camera and an 8x10 camera. The National Portrait Gallery has a selection of his Street Vendor transparencies. He plans to have a book published on large format portraiture in 2016/2017.
