This expresses my idea of democracy. Whatever differs from this, to the extent of the difference, is no democracy” -A. Lincoln There is nothing more spectacular than the human spirit. Lincoln personified it and he paid the ultimate sacrifice – assassination. The Lincoln Presenters are men who took up the mantel of leadership to uphold Lincoln’s morals and beliefs based on freedom, truth, integrity, and dignity. The Presenters live, teach, and perpetuate the Lincoln spirit. After reading Teams of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, I had a calling to capture that spirit with dignified and heroic portraits. The Presenters are not superficial and to give distinction, clarity, and stature to the portraits, I used an 8x10 camera. They not only want to physically resemble Lincoln, but also look to keep Lincoln’s beliefs alive as a tribute to American values and democracy. It is another to make others care about them by revealing the core of their humanness” - Paul Strand Influenced by Theodore Géricault’s masterpiece, The Raft of Medusa and its portrayal of hope and despair and the global migration of immigrants from the diaspora to America, I wanted to emphasize the individuality and courage of immigrant Street Venders. Desperate migrants are willing to risk their lives, since there is no opportunity in third-world countries to go beyond poverty and the ability to feed a family is almost non-existent. Street Vending gives the immigrant aspiration and hope to achieve the American Dream. The existential purpose in photographing Street Vendors was to uncover, through portraiture, the human spirit and life’s struggles chiseled into immigrant faces. As in The Raft of Medusa, the “face is the mirror of the soul” is conveyed in the figures faces. I wanted to explore hero emulation by photographing men who desired to look like and live in Hemingway’s image. To emphasize the hero worship, the photographs were taken to symbolize a living tribute to Hemingway and all that he embodied. To capture Hemingway’s bigger than life persona, I was influenced by marble sculpture busts of the 18th and 19th century, since sculpture represented important people and great literary heroes. To give prominence and power to the portraits, I used an 8x10 camera, photographing the men centered in black negative space anchored by the big mass of the head and shoulders. During the festival bullfights the dance of life and death is played out in a drama between the bull and matador. I am always interested in exploring why people want to face and test death. The tension created between the bull and the matador’s elegant ballet movements are intensified by the bull’s long sharp horns coming within inches of the matador. I photographed the powerful antagonist – the bull, to heighten and juxtapose the grace and beauty of the matador’s artistry against the bull’s power. The bullring presents danger and a matador’s one-inch miscalculation can cause certain death. When a matador enters the bullring to test his courage, he grabs life by the throat. These Presenters can be generals and abolitionists. Ulysses S. Grant, Frederick Douglas, and Harriet Beecher Stowe were all instrumental in supporting Lincoln’s quest to move the country towards equality. As in Homer’s Odyssey, every test that Odysseus encounters takes huge mental and physical strength. Just when Odysseus is about to give up at the height of mental and physical exhaustion, he succeeds. A Power Lifter is forced to face physical and mental weaknesses and strengths to overcome fears and doubts of what the body can achieve. To convey the essence of life’s existential struggles, I focused on the pivotal moment where extreme exertion, mental focus, and physical strength come together. The greatest Greek statue, Laocoon and His Sons, is an example of a powerful metaphor for life’s existential struggle. This is articulated in Laocoon’s taut body and expressive head. Which of these two is better only God knows” -Socrates From all over the world people are drawn to Spain to temp death. To run with the bulls in the streets is a time-honored tradition gambling with life and death. The Runners risk their lives just to have bragging rights. However, underneath the bravado there lies the dilemma of who we are in the world and how do we fit in? Man always took risks and the need to test our place in an existential way separates humans from other species. An essential part of existence is to challenge fear and death. The Runners are a microcosm of man’s innate desire to stretch the limits of the individual.
